Outreach and Service Commission

Monday, November 28, 2016, 3:00 p.m.

Present: 

Bill Dornbush, Jennifer Dornbush, Diane Jackson, Dian Jorgensen, John Creager, Lindsey Kerr,

Marsha Vas-Dupre, Carmen Rapp

Opening Devotion: Dian opened the meeting with a prayer.

 

CURRENT BUSINESS:

Fair Trade Products – Bill 

The Snowflake Bazaar receipts were $450.

Selling assignments:

December 4:  Carmen,

December 11:  Marsha and Jack

December 18:  Dian and Diane

December 25:  Christmas Day, (one service at 10:00 a.m.)

January 1:  (New Year’s Day)

 

Homeless Ministries Taskforce Update - John

The Taskforce has been talking with neighbors around the church property.  They have met with the faculty at R.L. Stevens Elementary School.  There are some concerns.  All have been invited to the informational meeting on Wednesday, November 30.

 

Thanksgiving Offering Schedule – Bill 

After some discussion, it was decided that we will try to have the Thanksgiving offering on the first Sunday in November.  Bill will research further.

 

Socks, underwear collection – Diane Jackson

The bulletin board is completed and the collection boxes are out.   There have been some concerns and it was decided to store the donations on the stage after worship each Sunday. 

 

OUTREACH AND SERVICE REPORTING:

            Annual Report included in packet distributed this meeting.

            Report at All Church Conference – included in today’s packet

Outreach and Service Commission is in the “Being” Group with Finance Committee, Stewardship Committee and Being Leaders.  Presentations will have to be coordinated to stay within the time limit.

 

NEW BUSINESS:

Suggested Change to Commission Name – John Creager

After discussion, it was decided that more research needed to be done before more action taken.

 

Film Series Sponsorship – Lindsey

The Social Action Committee of Congregation Shomrei Torah is working on a film series, “Sparks of Hope – Healing through Innovation and Creativity” which will be presented January 28, February 25 and March 25, 2017.  We have decided to be a co-sponsor, which has no financial obligation.  The film programs are free, but donations will be accepted. The films will be presented in the Congregation Shomrei Torah sanctuary at 7:00 p.m. 

 

Sonoma County’s Response to Standing Rock – Lindsey

Lindsey spoke of needs of the people of Standing Rock.  “Bath houses” will be provided and there is need for a place to drop off tents, etc.  Lindsey will speak to the staff regarding space and drop-off times. A prayer vigil and day of fasting are being planned.

 

Coordination with Peace with Justice Center – Marsha

The sanctuary movement is their current focus.

 

F.I.S.H. Food Collection – Jennifer

Dian has resigned from the commission, but will continue to be our liaison to F.I.S.H. 

We will prepare the bags for the February F.I.S.H. collection at the January meeting.

 

Bulletin Board

Andrea has completed the socks and underwear bulletin board.

 

Roseleaf for December-January issue

F.I.S.H. article completed

 

Our next meeting will be Monday, December 19 at 3:00 p.m. in the Carriage House.

 

Lindsey closed the meeting with prayer.

 

The meeting was adjourned at 4:50 p.m.
