Church and Society
The Church and Society Commission is primarily involved with local or national issues. The commission is guided by the six sections of the “Social Principles” of the United Methodist Church: the natural world, affirming responsibility for the use of the Lord’s creation, the nurturing community, affirming the family and strengthening its relationships, the social community, affirming all persons are equally valuable in God’s sight, the economic community, all economic systems are under the judgment of God, the political community, holding governments responsible for the protection of people’s basic freedoms, and the world community, “God’s world is one world.”
The Church and Society Commission reaches out to help others. Individuals identify needs and bring interest and seek people to support those needs. The Church supports Habitat for Humanity of Sonoma County as a Covenant Church. F.I.S.H. is the recipient of food collections and donations to help feed the hungry. The Living Room, a daytime drop-in center for women and their children and the Children’s Village, a stable family multi-generational home for children and their siblings in foster care, are supported through special offerings. The Church hosts a family room at the Family Support Center for families in transition.
Church and Society Commission seeks to educate the congregation and community with educational forums, speakers and classes. Social issues are many and varied. The commission meets the third Monday of each month, 3:30 p.m. in the Library.
