Originally from the Seattle area, Doug grew-up “outside the beltway” around Washington, DC. He graduated from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA with a BA in music and a minor in English, and received his Masters in Teaching from Portland State University, with an emphasis in Secondary Choral Education. Doug lives in Santa Rosa and has been married for 32 years to Shelly. Their adult daughter, Avery, stayed to live in San Diego after she graduated from USD in 2014.
Beginning his music teaching career in Anchorage, Alaska, Doug’s early years next took him to California, then up to Oregon. Upon returning to California, Doug taught at Santa Rosa Junior College before going full-time with FUMC in 2002.
Doug’s school choirs regularly earned top state honors. He has led various national and international choral tours, worked with an array of choral luminaries, and is a member of the American Choral Directors Assoc and the National Assoc of Church Musicians.
Doug serves in FUMC's Creative Arts and Outreach areas, and is staff liaison to several church committees. He works closely with the pastors and staff, supports the part-time musicians in their jobs, and has key roles in various church-based activities.
On their Bona Vita hillside, Shelly & Doug grow 33 Tuscan-variety olive oil trees. He also loves to read, play golf, attend concerts and shows, and travel with his family and friends!
