Growing with the Prophets: Jeremiah

See, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant

(Jeremiah 1:10).

Monday: Notice how throughout this series the prophet always speaks God’s word during a particular time and place – even though that word continues to speak to our time and place as well.

 

Read Jeremiah 1:1-3

Questions for Reflection and Application

1. If God spoke so particularly during the time of the biblical prophets, do you have confidence that God is speaking particularly today?

2. How can you grow in your discernment of God’s Word?

 

Prayer Focus

Pray for God’s particular Word for your life and our world today

 

Tuesday: Jeremiah is called by God at a young age.

 

Read Jeremiah 1:4-10

Questions for Reflection and Application

1. Do you have a good sense about God’s calling for your life?

2. What are some excuses you use to resist God’s call?

 

Prayer Focus

Pray for clarity about God’s calling in your life and the will to do it.

 

Wednesday: Prophets often see visions that need interpretation.  God’s word is not only heard, it is sometimes seen.

 

Read Jeremiah 1:11-13

Questions for Reflection and Application

1. Have you had any godly visions lately?  What do you see?  How do you know it is from God?

2. If so, what are you going to do about it?

 

Prayer Focus

Pray that you might be attentive to godly visions.

 

Thursday: The vision of the boiling pot is explained.  Jeremiah is assured that God will be with him as he will endure much hardship.

 

Read Jeremiah 1:14-19

Questions for Reflection and Application

1. How does the Lord communicate with you?

2. Are you assured of God’s presence when you face hardship?

 

Prayer Focus

Pray for strength and God’s presence for yourself or others who are facing difficult times.

 

Friday: God sees the people as a spouse (remember Hosea) whose love and devotion were cherished.

 

Read Jeremiah 2:1-3

Questions for Reflection and Application

1. How do you feel toward God?

2. How do you think God feels toward you?

3. How can you grow in your love for God?

 

Prayer Focus

Pray for a greater and deeper devotion to God.
