Week of January 24, 2016

God is here!  Awaken to the presence of God.

Monday: Moses awakens to God in the burning bush as he goes about an ordinary day.

Read Exodus 3:1-12

Questions for Reflection and Application

If it is at the beginning of the day, where might you expect to encounter God through your ordinary activities?  If it is at the end or middle of the day, where or when have you encountered God through your ordinary activities today?

What does it mean to turn aside (v. 3)?  In other words, God is “here” in every moment yet we are often asleep to God’s presence.  What does it mean to turn aside as see?

Prayer Focus

Pray that you might awaken more and more to God’s presence as you live and experience an ordinary day.

Tuesday:  Moses’ first response to awakening to God’s presence is to want to know who God is.  He moves from “here” to “who.”  In other words, when you awaken to God’s presence it is natural and fruitful to inquire for a deeper understanding of who God is.

Read Exodus 3:13-22

Questions for Reflection and Application

Who is God?  How has God revealed God’s nature to you?  What can you say about God?

What is the significance and meaning of the name God reveals to Moses?

Prayer Focus

Pray a prayer of adoration and praise to God naming the characteristic of God you named above.

Wednesday: Moses’ encounter with God at the burning bush continues.  Moses is unsure of his ability to do what God calls him to do.  God is patient and reassures Moses that he will provide all that Moses needs to fulfill his calling.

Read Exodus 4:1-17

Questions for Reflection and Application

Do you ever feel inadequate or ill equipped to do what God calls you to do?  If so, you are in good company!

What are your insecurities or fears about fulfilling God’s call for your life?  What is God asking you to do that you are unsure about your ability to do it?

Prayer Focus

Pray about your calling.  Pray for faith to trust that God will provide all you need to fulfill it.

Thursday:   As a member of the body of Christ, your calling is related to Jesus.  In some way or form it is a continuation and embodiment of his mission.  In today’s reading Jesus begins his public ministry by reading from Isaiah a passage that describes his mission.

Read Luke 4:14-21

Questions for Reflection and Application

What good news do you have to share today?

With whom might you share it?

Prayer Focus

Pray that the mission of Jesus would be embodied in your life today.

Friday:  When God is present (“here”) there is always enough.

Read Luke 9:12-17

Questions for Reflection and Application

Do you have a scarcity or an abundance mindset?  How does awakening to God’s presence effect your mindset and what is possible?

Prayer Focus:  Pray for God to provide all the resources we need to fulfill our purpose and mission as a church.
