Week of January 17, 2016

Monday: Jesus turns the water used for the rites of purification into wine revealing that he is the one who purifies and brings true life.

Read John 2:1-11

Questions for Reflection and Application

What area of your life seems like stale water in an old jar?  How could Jesus renew that?

How might you advance the renewal of our church?

Prayer Focus

Join us at the prayer service tonight at 7 p.m. at the Montgomery Sanctuary.  Pray that we might know what Jesus wants us to do and pray for the Spirit to help us do it.

Tuesday:  The sign of Jesus turning water into wine (see yesterdays reading) foreshadows the gift of living water in today’s text.

Read John 4:7-14

Questions for Reflection and Application

How thirsty are you for the water that Jesus gives?  How thirsty do you think we are as a church?

What can you do (what can we do as a church) to drink more fully from this living water?

Prayer Focus

Pray for a greater thirst for God (for you and our church).

Wednesday: Today’s reading continues to build on the theme of the last two days.  The living water Jesus gives to us is the Spirit that is available to all flesh because of his death and resurrection (i.e. his glorification)

Read John 7:37-39

Questions for Reflection and Application

Has the flow of the Spirit in your life been like a refreshing spring, a dried creek or a parched desert?  How would you assess the Spirit’s stream in our church?

What might be helpful (or has been helpful) to release the Spirit in your life? In our church?

Prayer Focus

Pray that the Spirit, the living water that flows from within each of us, will be palpable whenever we meet together as a church.

Thursday:   Yesterday’s reading referred to the rivers of living water that flows out of your heart.  The Spirit uniquely equips you with gifts that are essential to the identity and mission of the church.

Read 1 Corinthians 12:1-11

Questions for Reflection and Application

What gifts have you been given for the common good?

Are you contributing them to full effect?

Prayer Focus

Pray that God would work all of our gifts together for the building up of our church and our mission in the world.

Friday:  We belong to Christ and each other!  From this foundation, this assurance, an abundant life can be built.

Read 1 Corinthians 12:12-27

Questions for Reflection and Application

Do you recognize your need for the gifts others have been given?

Are you at one with the members of our church?  If so, how can you receive the gifts they offer more fully.  If not, what can you do to be reconciled to them.

Prayer Focus:  Pray for the unity of our church and the blessing that each one is to all the others.
