Week of October 18, 2015

Each week during our new series you will be invited to get into a rhythm of loving and serving our city.  This week’s reading invites us to consider how God’s creative love is at work in the midst of the political realm of our city.

Monday:

:Consider how God’s creative love is at work in the midst of the political realm of our city.

Read Mark 12: 12-14

Questions for Reflection and Application

How does Jesus respond to the Pharisees’ political posturing?

What might we learn here about the way Jesus shifts the conversation to a matter of substance?

Prayer Focus

Lord, help us to go deeper in just one conversation we have with a friend, coworker, relative, or neighbor this week

Tuesday:  Jesus invites the people to examine more closely their everyday governance.

Read Mark 12: 15-16

Questions for Reflection and Application

Take a moment and reflect on what our local government looks like, and who is best served by it. Whose “image” does it bear?

Whose “image” is not considered in our local political leadership?

Prayer Focus

Creator God, open our eyes anew to the systems in place right before us. Help us to be brave enough to examine, question, and seek the transformation of our world.

Wednesday: : So, what belongs to God?

Read Mark 12: 17

Questions for Reflection and Application

If coinage bears Caesar’s image, what bears God’s image?

How do you determine what of your time, talent, and treasure you give to God (and the service of God’s people)?

Prayer Focus

Lord, help me to see all people as reflections of your love.

Thursday:  What are God’s commands?

Read Isaiah 16: 3-4a

Questions for Reflection and Application

How might Isaiah’s use of “justice” differ from the way we think about justice in the political realm?

Who are our modern outcasts? How might we hide them? How might we invite them to settle among us?

Prayer Focus

God, remind us that we were once outcasts, and show us how to care for the outcasts and refugees in our midst.

Friday:  Faith in a governance of steadfast love.

Read Isaiah 16: 4b-5

Questions for Reflection and Application

What does this passage say about our part in God’s work in the world?

What does it mean to be co-creators with God? How is God at work as we seek more just systems of governance?

Prayer Focus

Come, Lord, and, as we are faithful, establish a kingdom of steadfast love among us.
