Minutes of the Finance Committee
First United Methodist Church, Santa Rosa
Wednesday, September 10, 2014--Carriage House
Present: Pamala Stephens (Chair), Mary Brunet, Marjorie Noble, Steve Zwick and Trustee Chair George Kemmerer.
Absent: Ryan Comiskey, Jack Dupre, Greg Roth, Larry Thompson and Larry Schmidt.
Pamala Stephens called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and began with a prayer.
Approval of Minutes
Minutes of the Finance Committee meeting of August 13, 2014 were approved as written: Moved by Steve Zwick, seconded by Pamala Stephens, motion passed unanimously.
Trustee Fundraising Request – Fellowship Hall Chairs
Trustee Chair George Kemmerer requested approval of a specific fundraiser to purchase 100 new chairs for Fellowship Hall. The Trustees need $7,000 to purchase 100 chairs and obtain a volume discount. He indicated that the Trustees would have a table at all services at the Montgomery campus on Sunday, September 21st and September 28. At that time they will provide individuals with the opportunity to “purchase” a chair and/or make a donation towards the purchase of the chairs.
Steve Zwick moved to approve the proposed Trustee request to fundraise for the purchase of 100 new chairs for Fellowship Hall on September 21st and 28th. Marge Noble seconded the motion and it was passed unanimously.
Mary Brunet reviewed the financial statements for August 2014. During the month the main checking account balance improved to -$4,112.22 from the prior month of -$14,693.53. The operating fund balance is now in the positive by $33.39 again an improvement over last month of -$3,159.45.
Year-to-date (YTD) pledges and gifts were $457,388.07, which is 91.79% of the YTD budgeted amount of $498,296.96. A slight, but important, uptick from last month. Further good news is that pledges were at 100.9% of the budget amount for the month of August. Total YTD total income was about 95.22% of the YTD budgeted amount. YTD total expenses were 99.32% of the YTD budgeted amount. Overall, to date total expenses have exceeded total income by $17,478.94. However, that is a decrease from the prior month of $25,854.28. This is encouraging financial news.
“Join the Conversation, Discovering Our Common Vision” Update
Pamala provided the Committee with an update from the group discussion on Friday, September 5th facilitated by Peg Ferrel on the topic “Perceptions of giving, finance, mortgage”. Essentially the Finance Committee needs to find ways to reach and convey financial information to those who have not been reached in the past. This outreach would include specific invitations and a fun venue. This should be done at a convenient time and at multiple times. Include ideas like “Fun with Finance”, “You, me and our money”
Stewardship Campaign Update
Pamala provided the Committee with the selected art work for the campaign. Mary indicated that plans are underway for various meetings with the congregation and the creation of video(s). Again, Kick-off Sunday will be October 26th, and Consecration Sunday will be November 23rd.
Fund Raising Request – Thanksgiving Dinner/FISH
Pamala brought forward a proposal/request on behalf of Andy Kawecki to sell tickets for the Church Thanksgiving Dinner at $5 per person, $10 for a family, with monies collected to be donated to FISH.
The Committee discussed the fundraiser and the selling of tickets for the Thanksgiving dinner. We learned that there was to be a meeting to talk about the ticket sale on Thursday, September 11th at 3:00 p.m. at the Church. While the Committee was supportive of a fundraiser for FISH they felt that the sale of tickets to the Thanksgiving dinner should be worked out with those attending the meeting on September 11th. There was no motion to approve the fundraiser at this time.
