Week of January 31, 2016

We are thankful!  Awaken to the goodness of God.

Monday: Jesus speaks to his disciples about the need to focus on the goodness of God.

Read Matthew 6: 25-29

Questions for Reflection and Application

Take a fearless inventory about how much time you spend each day concerned about meeting your basic needs of food, clothing, and shelter. What is your primary concern?

What in your life is “more than clothing”? Where is your greatest passion, and how is that of God? How could this passion cultivate a deeper life of faith?

Prayer Focus

Pray for God to nourish and inspire your passion for life.

Tuesday:  The response of a thankful heart

Read Matthew 6: 30-32

Questions for Reflection and Application

Share about a time in your life when you were truly grateful. In the midst of that time of gratitude, did you want for anything else?

How might you practice handing yourself over to God in complete gratitude today?

Prayer Focus

Pray that God would create in you a clean heart filled with only thanksgiving.

Wednesday: Strive for the Kingdom of God

Read Matthew 6: 33-34

Questions for Reflection and Application

What might gratitude have to do with striving for the Kingdom of God?

How can you live in a way that expresses your gratitude to everyone you meet?

Prayer Focus

Pray to God that you might have the courage to live a grateful life in which you are fully present in each

Thursday:   Give thanks to the LORD.

Read Psalm 136: 1-9

Questions for Reflection and Application

What is the first thing the Psalmist is grateful for in this poem? Why is that important?

How have you experienced God’s steadfast love? How might you respond to that love? How might we respond to that love as a church community?

Prayer Focus

Give thanks to the LORD, who, indeed, is good.

Friday:  Recounting God’s mighty acts

Read Psalm 136: 10-26

Questions for Reflection and Application

How is this recounting of God’s saving acts a way of giving thanks?

How has God acted in your life? In the life of our congregation? Share this with someone, and give thanks.

Prayer Focus

Pray to God that we would remember all that God has done for us.
