Week of January 10, 2016

The baptism of Jesus and related texts reveal to us the necessity of Water, Spirit and Fire in our lives.

Monday: Jesus is baptized by John. Jesus comes to baptize us with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Read Luke 3:15-22

Questions for Reflection and Application

What does it mean to be baptized with the Holy Spirit?  What does it mean to be baptized with fire?  How would you characterize your baptism?

What promptings of the Holy Spirit do you discern today?  What are you going to do about it?

Prayer Focus

Pray for the power of the Holy Spirit to be manifested in your life today. Pray for a purifying fire to incinerate any obstacles to that power in your inner life.

Tuesday:  The Gospel begins to be accepted in Samaria.  The apostles Peter and John were sent to the Samaritans that they might receive the Holy Spirit.

Read Acts 8:14-17

Questions for Reflection and Application

Is there any part of the word of God that you have not fully accepted?

Who can you talk to about working through this obstacle?

Prayer Focus

Pray to receive the Holy Spirit today.

Wednesday: One of the ways to productively read through today’s text is to see it as one way of articulating the meaning of your baptism in Christ.

Read Isaiah 43:1-7

Questions for Reflection and Application

Are you assured of God’s love for you?  Not just that God loves everyone, but that God loves you?

Is there someone in your life who needs the same assurance?  How might you communicate that to them effectively?

Prayer Focus

Pray for the assurance of faith and pray for the one you identified above.

Thursday:   In Monday’s reading Jesus heard a voice from heaven.  Psalm 29 is a meditation on that heavenly voice.

Read Psalm 29

Questions for Reflection and Application

What creative, powerful word does the voice of God want to speak through you today?

What worshipful expressions can you ascribe to the Lord?

Prayer Focus

Pray in the form of this Psalm.  In other words, pray a prayer of praise by describing and celebrating some aspect of God’s character.

Friday:  Another account (compare Tuesday) of people receiving the Holy Spirit through the baptism of Jesus.

Read Acts 19:1-7

Questions for Reflection and Application

What is the difference between the baptism of John and the baptism of Jesus?

How might you be true to your baptism today?

Prayer Focus

Pray for the Holy Spirit to be more clearly manifested to our world.
