Youth Commission, December 12, 2011
Youth Commission Minutes
December 12, 2011
Present: Sonda Anderson, Susan Backer, Cassandra Lawrence, Paul O’Rear, Michelle Poggi
1. Opening Prayer led by Cassandra
2. Youth overnight was a success: well-attended; 14 youth; good mix of middle and high school; shopped for Giving Tree gifts; wrapped gifts; traveled through prayer stations on the theme of “Go Light Your World;” sardines, pizza a midnight, baked cookies at 2am, watched the lunar eclipse at 5am. Will consider doing this again for an end-of-the-school year event.
3. Food Bank – Community Service Activity – January, 4, 2012, 5:30pm at Redwood Empire Food Bank. This is the only date available until mid June. There is also a new organization (Brookwood Health Center) that Pastor Greg is connecting with and will give more information to Cassandra.
4. Final Spring Schedule of Activities: Epiphany Party is moved to January 15. Academy Awards is May 20th. Broomball is on for both middle and high school youth, March 2nd. April 21st: Global Youth Service Day.
5. Santa Sitting: Sunday, December 18th. Cassandra is contacting youth to find out who will be there to help. Pat Sanborn and Older Adult Ministries is providing snacks. This is the last activity for December.
6. Cassandra explained Urban Camp (a Conference Camp). Youth will learn about services provided in an urban setting, doing community service in an urban environment, eat at international restaurants, using public transportation.
7. Ennegram/Parenting classes: Christopher Doyle is the presenter we had planned to use for the Parenting class, but instead we are going to have Dave Warner present both classes. Dave will be presenting two 2-hour classes. The classes will take place on February 12th and 19th, 3-5pm.
8. SSP Dates: Middle School dates are the same, June 10-14. High school dates are different: August 3-12, which is very close to the start of the school year.
9. Service dates for Summer 2012: Glide Memorial Food Service will be the only service day due to the other service weeks lined up through SSP (date to be announced). Cassandra will contact Glide to set the date.
10. Finances: how can we monitor the budget as a group? We have about $10,000 going through our program each year, and we need to have some safeguards in place to protect us from liability, unnecessary scrutiny, and from problems if Cassandra were not here for some reason and someone needed to step in. Currently Cassandra is keeping track but it’s not with specific entries with names, check numbers, etc. Paul will check with Mary Brunet to see if there is a way to use the existing church accounting system. We’ll also have a budget report at each meeting.
11. Next meeting: Monday, January 9, 2012.
