Outreach and Service Commission

Present: Bill & Jennifer Dornbush, Susan Russel, Kris Marshall, Laurie Batchelter, Marsha Dupre, Maurine Christ
Meeting was opened with a prayer by Maurine.
Minutes were approved.
Current Business:
* Fair Trade Report: Bill related that sales doubled in the month of October coming in $5.00 short of being the highest month ever; 2,500 minis were sold; At the Coming Home weekend sales of $400. were realized. Susan expressed some concerns about logistics of sales and inventory following the 11:00 service. Kris suggested that orders could be taken and delivered the following week. It was decided that this plan should be tried.

*Community Garden, Stony Point: Jennifer reported that fall gardens have been planted. FUMC will host a Sonoma County Community Garden Summit for those already participating in a community garden and and those who would like to do so. The Summit will be held November 5th from 1:00pm to 5:00 pm at the Montgomery Campus. The key note speakers will be Miles Gordon of Mendocino Gardens and Bill Maynard of the American Community Garden Association. Further information can be found on the web site, iGROW.
*Habitat for Humanity: Our representative, Susan Russel, wondered if the VIM group would be
interested in working on projects for Habitat. It was mentioned that workers from the entire
congregation were encouraged to participate. The VIM group’s list of names would be available for
contact purposes. Habitat is in the process of purchasing two homes in foreclosure for their next building
*Request for community volunteer tutors will be made in the bulletin and the next Roseleaf. Kris will write this information.
New Business:
*Underwear, Sock and Toiletries Drive will begin in Advent, November 27th and end December 18th.
Susan will bring boxes. Kris will keep a running account. A notice will be placed in the bulletin.
Diane Jackson has delivery information.
*FISH: Laurie discussed the drive for Fish that will be coming up the first week in February. We
need to be asking for bags from our favorite stores to bring to the next meeting. At this time we
will stable the printed material which Laurie will bring. She will coordinate drivers to transport the food
to FISH. We will all need to help carry the bags to these vehicles.
*How to Promote Outreach in the Church:
Continue announcements in church bulletin and Roseleaf, post information on web page and
update bulletin board with current projects.
Other Business:
Catholic Charities Family Support Center sent an invitation to attend their annual coffee and gathering of room sponsors on Friday, October 28th at 10:00am. At this time, they will discuss the upcoming Christmas holiday and the needs of the children and their parents. There will be an opportunity to take a tour to see the many new rooms and services at the shelter, as well as meet the new manager of the Center, Jennielynn Holmes-Davis.
