Monday: Often when we think of spiritual calling in the Bible, we look to the better-known individual characters, such as that of Adam, Samuel, and Jacob, who respond to God in profound ways. But each of these people exists in community with others, who are also a part of the call story.

Week of October 9, 2016

Called…The call of Adam is a call to us all to care for God’s creation.


Monday: God formed man, trees and every bird of the air and animal of the tree from the ground. We are all of the earth and related.  God puts Adam in the garden and calls him to take care of it. The call to human beings to care for the earth is rooted in our Creation and first calling.

Read Genesis 2:4b-9, 15-20

In his old age Abraham receives a call and responds in faith and trust.  Through Abraham all the nations of the world will be blessed.  This week we will explore Abraham’s call and life.


Monday: You are never too old to receive and respond to God’s call.  God initiates an everlasting covenant with Abraham and promises to make Abraham the ancestor of a multitude (which is what his new name means).

Week of September 25, 2016


Last week we looked at the call of the first disciples and reflected on our own call to follow Jesus.  This week we explore how we are not simply passive recipients of that call but active responders.

Monday: Jacob’s is anything but passive in his encounter with God.  The image of Jacob’s wrestling God is a powerful image of how we often struggle with God.  Jacob is rewarded in that struggle with a new name signifying a new calling and identity.
